Navigating PowerPoint

by Peggy Duncan

Having recently sat through a presentation with someone who was very new to PowerPoint and feeling their pain, I wanted to share with you some navigation tips for your next winning presentation.

As you're moving through your presentation, and you need to refer to a previous slide, you don't have to Esc the presentation, go to slide sorter view, find the slide you want, select it, and go back to slide show. Whew!

Instead, all you have to do is type the number of the slide you need to go back to, and press Enter. How do you know the slide number? By referring to your thumbnail handouts of your presentation.
If you have a lot of handout pages, it may be quicker this way.

During the Slide Show:

  1. Right-click (or press Shift+F10), point to Go on the shortcut menu, and then point to By Title.
  2. Click the title of the slide you want to go to.
  3. To return, right-click (or press Shift+F10), point to Go on the shortcut menu, and then click Previously Viewed.

You can also use your keyboard arrow keys or the PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN keys to advance the next action during your slide show. Also, pressing N (for Next) and P (for previous), the spacebar, and left click will advance the next action.

To go to the first slide in your presentation anytime during the show, hold down both your mouse buttons for about two seconds.

To pause your show during a discussion, you can turn the slide black or white so your audience can focus on what you're saying. Type B or W to turn the slide off, and retype it to turn it back on.

Hope this helps!
